TellTale — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 25 July 2026

TellTale is a private sailing-training tool. It records sensor data and video during a training session and sends it to a server controlled by the app owner, where a coach can review it. This policy explains exactly what is collected, why, and who can see it.

See also the terms of use, which cover how the recorded material may be used.

Who is responsible

The app and its server are operated privately by the app owner (contact: the e-mail address listed on the Google Play listing). There is no company behind the app and the data is not a commercial product.

What the app collects

DataWhyStored where
Precise location (GPS position, speed, heading), 1 Hz The core purpose: measuring speed, course, tacks and gybes On the phone and on the owner's server
Motion sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer), 50 Hz Heel angle, rotation rate and manoeuvre timing On the phone and on the owner's server
Video and audio from the phone camera, or from a paired action camera Reviewing technique together with the measurements On the phone and on the owner's server
Device battery status (level, temperature, health) Warning the coach before the equipment dies mid-session On the owner's server
Nearby Bluetooth device names, only names starting with "Osmo"/"DJI" Detecting whether the action camera is switched on On the owner's server
Phone call state (whether a call is ongoing) Returning to the app automatically when a coach call ends Not stored

The app does not collect contacts, messages, browsing history, advertising identifiers or payment information, and it contains no advertising and no third-party analytics.

When collection happens

Logging starts when the app is opened and stops when the session is ended (or automatically after ten minutes without movement). The app shows a permanent notification while it is logging. Video is recorded only during drills or when the user starts it manually.

Who can see the data

Data is sent to a single private server operated by the app owner and is protected by an access key. Only people the owner gives a key to can view it: the sailor, their coach, and — because learning from each other is the point of the system — the other sailors in the same training group.

Within that group, measurements such as speed, tracks, manoeuvre scores and challenge results are shared under the sailor's first name. Video is different: the coach always sees it, but it is shown to the other sailors only if that sailor (or their guardian) has agreed to it — and declining does not exclude anyone from challenges or leaderboards.

Nothing is visible outside the group. The data is not sold, shared with advertisers or published.

The owner does analyse the collected material in order to improve the system and to build general sailing knowledge — for example polar diagrams and best-practice references for tacks and gybes. Results of that analysis are only ever shared in aggregated or anonymised form, where individual sailors cannot be identified. See the terms of use for details.

How long it is kept

Measurement data (position, motion, events) is kept for as long as it is useful for training comparisons. Live-stream video recordings are deleted automatically after 48 hours, and older material may be deleted at any time. The user can delete a whole session, including its video, from the coach panel.

Children

The app is not directed at children. If it is used by a minor sailor, it should be installed and operated by a parent or coach who accepts this policy on their behalf.

Your choices

Security

Transfers to the server require an access key. Files on the server are readable only by the owner's account. Because this is a private, non-commercial setup, no formal certification or audit is claimed.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top is updated and the new version appears at this address.
